Pumice is an excellent substrate for holding water and nutrients, making them available for the plants.  Pumice can be used alone, but is best used with akadama, or with both akamada and kiryu.

At Canada Bonsai, most trees are in the following mix:
50% Akadama
25% Pumice
25% Kiryu
